"Sick Ferret's Owner Hopes to Cash in Her Chip" read the headline on the front of the SouthtownStar on Thursday, March 19. My first thought was, "It must have been a slow news day." My second thought was, "What a sad, sad world we live in."
It takes a lot to really ruffle my feathers. I basically operate on the premise that there is Divine justice and that you reap what you sow. However, for some odd reason, this story irritated me to no end. Apparently, the seller (Erin Morris of Tinley Park) was encouraged to sell her Illinois-shaped chip on Ebay after reading a SouthtownStar story about two sisters from Virginia who are selling a cornflake shaped like Illinois on Ebay.
I'm thinking these sellers have way too much time on their hands, along with their potential buyers. What on earth is anyone going to do long term with a chip or a corn flake shaped like Illinois and aren't there better ways to spend one's money? Furthermore, the Tinley Park potato chip is being sold to raise money to do surgery on a ferret, who according to Morris suffers from adrenal disease. She goes on to add that she had a tumor removed on a rat (I assume it was a pet rat, but at this point, who knows??), and that cost $209. Wow! Maybe I'm just missing the big picture here...
Interestingly, Ebay pulled the McIntire sisters' corn flake because the listing didn't clearly state that it was a collector's item, not an edible purchase. That has since been corrected and bidding ends today; however, one should note that bidding was up to $1,325 as of 9:30 a.m. CST, although the sisters have indicated they have some concern over the authenticity of the bids. Go figure!
The bid for the Tinley Park potato chip is now up to about $21 and bidding continues through March 29. Morris does note on her Ebay listing that originally she put it on Ebay just for fun, but, after numerous inquiries as to what she'd do with the money, she decided to set it aside for her ferret's surgery. I'd have to say that the SouthtownStar story didn't spin it quite that way. "So Whose Truth Is Truest?"... No, sorry, I digress...it's Friday Fun day on the blog. Are we having fun yet? I hope so! I'm so inspired that I'm off to dig through my bag of Doritos. I think I saw one shaped like the Eiffel Tower or maybe it was Pocahontas' tipi or maybe it was the pyramid where King Tut was buried or maybe...The possibilities are endless, and that's good news!
TGIF:)
